The mix of crudes refined by the company in 2008 had an average density of 32.7 degrees API and a sulphur content of around 0.7%, meaning that it could be classed as “medium sour”, though in reality the average is not very representative, as individual components can vary enormously and have opposite characteristics, such as “extra sweet” and “heavy sour”, the two most widely represented categories.
The type of raw materials used in 2007 demonstrates the strategy of refining unconventional crudes, which are normally sold at a discount to standard crudes, thereby providing the opportunity to maximise profitability.
In addition, Saras has one of the few refineries able to treat all of these types of crude at the same time thanks to its high flexible multi-train configuration.
