The value generated by the refining process derives mainly from the conversion and desulphurization units that upgrade the products of the primary crude distillation process.
The higher margins seen in 2008 made advantageous to refine some additional quantities of crude, even when using only partial refining cycles. This fact explains why the feedstock for conversion and desulphurisation units decreased as a share of the total refined crude.
