Founded in May 1962 by Angelo Moratti under the name S.A.RA.S. (Società Anonima Raffinerie Sarde), the Group has continuously evolved its operating methods and areas of expertise, pursuing a philosophy of value creation, environmental awareness, and technological innovation.
In June 2024, the Moratti family sold its Saras shares to the Vitol Group, a leading multinational trading company in oil and energy commodities. The Vitol Group acquired full ownership in the following months and delisted Saras shares from Euronext Milan.
Thanks to the skills and extensive experience of its people, Saras today integrates refining and electricity generation within the context of the energy transition, and strives for operational excellence, efficiency, and flexibility.
The heart of the Group is the Sarroch industrial site, strategically located on the southwestern coast of Sardinia, southwest of Cagliari. It is home to one of the largest refineries in the Mediterranean in terms of production capacity (approximately 15 million tons per year, equivalent to 300,000 barrels per day) and one of the most advanced in terms of plant complexity (Nelson Index of 11.7).
Saras sells and distributes, directly and through its subsidiaries, primarily petroleum products such as diesel, gasoline, heating oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), virgin naphtha, and aviation fuel, primarily in the Italian and Spanish markets, but also in various other European and non-European countries.
In early 2000, the refining business was complemented by the production and sale of electricity, through the commissioning of an IGCC (Combined Cycle Gasification) plant, one of the largest in the world, with an installed capacity of 575 MW, its annual output meets over 45% of Sardinia's electricity needs.
Finally, the Group produces and sells electricity from renewable sources through wind farms installed in Ulassai and Macchiareddu (Sardinia), with a total capacity of 171 MW and an annual production of approximately 250 GWh.
